SJ High speed trains

The SJ High speed trains connect Stockholm with the following cities: Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Malmö, Jönköping, Sundsvall, Östersund, Borlänge, Falun, Mora, Karlstad and Arvika.

Special features

• Comfortable, modern high-speed train
• First class economy: Free coffee or tea during the whole day and a breakfast served in all departures before 9 o’clock in the morning, Swedish newspapers, free access to wireless internet
• Second class: Bistro car with sandwiches, drinks and light meals to take away. Radio & music-channels (headsets not included)
• Classes: 1st class Economy and 2nd class

SJ Night trains

The SJ night trains to the Northern Sweden cover nearly 2,000 km — one of Europe’s longest train routes. With one daily departure from Göteborg and two daily departures from Stockholm, the SJ night trains to Northern Sweden give travelers an unparalleled chance to experience all of Sweden, from the rolling farmlands of the south to the arctic mountain regions of the north.

The SJ night trains connect Stockholm with Gothenburg, Umeå, Luleå, Kiruna and Narvik.

These SJ night trains are traditional overnight trains offering a variety of accommodations: seating, couchettes and sleeping cabins:

• Couchette: 6 bunks in women’s or mixed-gender compartment. Bedding consists of hostel sheets and a blanket.
• Sleeper without in-room toilet and shower: 3 beds in women’s or men’s compartment. Bedding consists of a pillow, sheet, duvet, and duvet cover.
• Sleeper with in-room toilet and shower: 2 beds in single or double occupancy. The compartment holds 2 Dux® beds and is roomier than a regular sleeper. Bedding consists of a pillow, sheet, duvet, and duvet cover. 1st class rail passes are needed for travelling in the double and single sleepers.

Special features

• Traditional dining car serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for reasonable prices;
• Travelers may bring as much luggage as they themselves can carry aboard (hazardous and overly bulky items are not permitted);
• Skis count as luggage as long as they are encased;
• Bicycles are not permitted aboard SJ night trains due to safety regulations.

City Night Line

These high quality night trains are running overnight between the major cities in Germany and on international routes to Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, France, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
City Night Line trains connect the following destinations: Amsterdam, Munich, Zürich, Berlin, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Basel, Frankfurt, Paris, Venice, Florence, Rome, Prague, Milan.

Special features

• All trains offer overnight accommodation: comfortable sleepers, couchettes or cars with reclining seats;
• On most connections a restaurant or bistro car is available;
• Deluxe sleeper compartments even feature a private shower and toilet cabin;
• Doors are safely locked with magnetic key cards.

Transportation rules

Luggage

Norway (NSB)
Luggage can be carried and stowed onboard. Maximum hand luggage weight permitted is 30 kg per passenger.

Sweden (SJ)
Luggage can be stored above seats and in compartments at both ends of train carriages. Unaccompanied luggage is not permitted onboard.

Denmark (DSB)
Luggage is permitted onboard with maximum measurements of 100x60x30 cm.

Finland (VR)
Luggage with a maximum weight of 20 kg costs  €5, any piece of luggage over that weight will cost €10.

Bicycles

Norway (NSB)
Bicycles are permitted on some trains and require a separate ticket, usually available at half the standard ticket price.
    
Sweden (SJ)
Bicycles are not allowed on SJ trains unless they can be folded as hand luggage.

Denmark (DSB)
Bicycles are permitted on all DSB trains and require a separate ticket that must be purchased with a passenger ticket or separately. Some local trains do not charge for bicycles.

Finland (VR)
Bicycles are allowed on most VR trains at a small fee. Folded bikes can be brought on board at no charge.

Animals

Norway (NSB)
Dogs on a leash and other small pets are permitted on all NSB trains, though they are not allowed in sleeping compartments, dining cars or disabled/children’s carriages. Animals under 40 cm of height travel free, otherwise a fee of 50% of an adult ticket will apply.

Sweden (SJ)
Two pets may travel with a passenger as long as they can fit in a second class seat. Larger animals requiring a seat will cost the same price as a youth fare.

Denmark (DSB)
For a fee, each passenger may travel with one dog. However passengers may travel with small dogs and other small pets, when transported in a pet carrier or similar at no cost.

Finland (VR)
Pets may be brought on board with owners. Each pet costs a €5 fee unless you would like to have an additional seat which would cost half the price of a regular ticket.

Accessibility

Norway (NSB)
Recent trains are equipped with elevators, washrooms for the disabled and chair fasteners. Older trains have wheelchair ramps and rails. Trains are family-friendly with baby changing tables, space for strollers and play areas for children.

Sweden (SJ)
Passengers with disabilities may require assistance for travel to and from stations and when switching trains at no additional cost when booking tickets or 24 hours before the train departure at +46 771 75 75 75 (touchtone 1). Regarding allergies, gluten- or lactose- free and vegetarian food may be ordered in first class on X 2000 trains. Baby changing tables are available in almost all carriages.

Denmark (DSB)
Strollers are permitted on certain carriages.

Finland (VR)
Assistance is available to passengers with disabilities, who must arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to departure. Accommodations are also made for individuals with allergies. Long-distance trains offer space for wheelchairs/strollers at no cost and family friendly playrooms.
